Overview: His family, friends and readers aside, Stuart isn’t a big fan of people, and he’s constantly imagining scenarios involving the end of the world as we know it. Of course, he’s not a psychopathic mass murderer, so he settles for annihilating the human race with his twisted imagination and word processor instead. Since surviving the various zombie apocalypses depicted in late ’90s video game franchises, he’s fantasised about the rise of the undead. Twenty years later, it seems the dead are destined to stay buried. Mankind will no doubt destroy itself in more mundane ways, but in the meantime, Stuart occupies himself by tormenting his fictional characters with hordes of bloodthirsty monsters. 1. Faster, Stronger, Deader
Being augmented would be cool, the infomercials said. Faster, Stronger, Better, they said. Turning into a zombie wasn’t part of the deal.
Unlike most, John didn’t sign up for ‘Augmentation.’ He was an outcast for a while as a result, slower and weaker than his peers. But at least he wasn’t killed then resurrected as an undead freak when malware ravaged the Aug servers, two years ago.
Since then, he’s been living on his wits, while his friends have been slaughtered by the zomb-augs. Lonely and angry, John wants to know who caused the apocalypse. He craves justice for the fallen.
When John sees evidence of other survivors in New York City, he has a choice. Should he risk death by venturing out of the fortified factory compound he calls home? Or will he stay behind his walls, in relative safety?
2. Dead or Buried
After a danger-fraught trip from New York to West Virginia, it seems John, his bot Frank, Amber, and their crew of AugFrees have found sanctuary. They’ve lost friends to the undead and the living, but now they can live without fear. Can’t they?
The subterranean AugFree stronghold of Neraka is all but impregnable. Its citizens are protected from the zomb-aug hordes and the gangs of bikers, Natives and religious cultists who scrap for territory and resources above ground.
All is not well, however. The power-crazed AugFree president cannot be trusted, and other players are making their moves. Political upheaval means John is far from safe.
When he and his friends are chased from the city, they must run for their lives once again. Who poses the most danger, though? The thousands of murdering zombies, or the maniacal humans fighting their own private wars?
John came to Neraka looking for answers about the zomb-augpocalypse. But will he survive long enough?
3. Undead on Arrival
Somehow, John survived his time outside the city, but will he and his friends pick the right side in Neraka’s civil war?
The sanctuary has always been divided. Now a renegade army general is staking his claim for the presidency, while other schemes hatch their own plots. The ensuing violence means the subterranean metropolis is no safer than the zombie-ridden plains and forests above ground.
Meanwhile, the undead hordes are amassing. The turmoil underground could give the zomb-augs and their mysterious commanders access, rendering the humans’ petty squabbles moot.
There is hope, however. Once upon a time, the Nerakan people were led by a good man, who was ousted thanks to the political machinations of his successor. He’s been in hiding ever since.
Desperate for peace, and still seeking the truth about the apocalypse, John resolves to restore the former leader to power. The current government has other ideas.
John must be smart, because he’s running out of allies. And with thousands of zombs closing in, time is of the essence.
