Athena series by Scott Robb (#1-3)
Requirements: ePUB / MOBI Reader, 1.9MB & 1.3MB
Overview: It is the 25th Century and Earth is ruled by a democracy, the ‘Demos’, so total that every sane adult can vote on any policy that the Council of Athens puts forward. But pure democracy brings its own evils. Earth’s Federation is at war with the Jovian League; led by Mars with its genetically enhanced soldiers, the ‘Modies’. The war is going badly and the Demos needs a hero to defend it. Ex-Strategos Theo Lycidides is a man without a mission. Disgraced and Censored by the Demos, he is an outcast, denied access to the social and intellectual life blood provided by the Net via Implant Technology. Until, that is, the Demos requires his very special skills once again. Brought back; first as a spy and then as a Strategos, Theo struggles to save the Demos from its enemies, both foreign and domestic. But can he protect the Demos from itself?
Genre: Fiction; Sci-fi/Fantasy
#1 – Demos
It is the 25th Century and in Athens Theophilos Lycidides is a retired (disgraced) Strategos for the Terran Demos. As a Strategos, Theo had all the responsibilities of a general, a diplomat and a governor in an age with faster than light travel but without FTL communications. An age when a Strategos may have to control a military campaign light years distant in space and months distant in time from the politicians theoretically in charge.
Theo has been forced into retirement after being Censored by the Demos for failing to stop the Jovian League from taking control of the Chalcidice System, a human colony created by Terran colonists and formally allied to the Demos. Lycidides had managed to save many colonists fleeing the Jovian attack by covering their retreat from Amphipolis, the main colony planet to a safe haven at Eion but in doing this had lost control of the system.
Theo resides now in Athens, the headquarters of the Demos. The Demos is governing system purporting to be the first pure democracy in human history. Using the Net, a worldwide communications and information system accessed by every human on Earth, Luna and nearby space stations via implants; every member of the Demos votes directly on each policy formulated by the governing ‘Council of Four Hundred’. These votes decide which of the proposed policies and directives become law. The Four Hundred are a council of humans and sentient AI’s who essentially run the Demos. Membership of the Demos is open to any adult human living on Terra (Earth, Luna or the major stations orbiting them), with the exception of those excluded by mental illness or Censorship.
Theo is approached by a council member and offered the opportunity to re-join the Demos. To do so he must accompany the Terran fleet about to set out to reinforce the Terran forces attacking the Jovian colony system of Sicilia. Ostensibly he will be the Terran liaison officer to the Congress Emissary travelling with the fleet to Sicilia. In fact he is to compile a report for the Council, which is considering censoring the commanders of the Terran forces at Syracuse, the main colony world in the Sicilian system.
Theo accepts this mission, but little does he know that there is more at stake than just personal redemption; the very survival of the Demos and Earth’s Federation now depend on the military and political skills of its greatest Strategos.
#2 – Crusade
The war has ended in defeat for Earth’s Federation and the victorious League has demanded the Federation dismantle its defences to meet the terms of the infamous ‘Instrument of Surrender’. The war might be over in Sol System but the League’s greatest Strategos, Gylippus, means to ignite a new conflict; with the Congress of Starfaring Species.
Lieutenant Xeno Fonnes has been cast ‘on the Beach’ by the end of the war. With no place for ex warriors on a defeated Earth, Xeno and his companions must turn mercenary and join Gylippus and his mercenary fleet, the ‘Hammer of Mars’, in an assault on the Congress at the behest of his employer; Kyrus, Warlord of the Carian Clans.
#3 – Hegemony
Xeno Fonnes and his mercenary company, the Hammer of Mars, have finally found peace after years of war against the Congress of Starfaring Species. Xeno and his Carian joinmate Suri have accepted a contract with Philip Argead, Hegemon of the Maccian Hegemony; the most powerful human polity outside Sol System. The contract gives the Hammer a base on the colony world of Amphipolis were Xeno, Suri, the men and women of the Hammer and the warriors of Suri’s Akhan exiles can rest up, repair their ships and recover their strength. But this time of peace is not without cost. The Hammer has agreed to fight for the Hegemony and Philip of Maccia is calling in the debt.
Philip has big plans. He intends to unify all of mankind under the Hegemony and then lead a new crusade against the Congress. But many opponents stand in the way of his grand ambitions. The great powers of Sol System are prepared to give up their own ambitions to ally against this upstart. And the Congress hasn’t forgotten or forgiven Xeno and Suri for their actions against it during the Carian Crusade.
Can the Hammer of Mars survive this new war or will Philip’s ambitions drive mankind into civil war and a conflict with the Congress it can never win.
