Aristocratic Liberalism: The Social and Political Thought of Jacob Burckhardt, John Stuart Mill, and Alexis de Tocqueville by Alan S. Kahan
Requirements: PDF Reader, 15 Mb
Overview: This treatise links three 19th-century philosophers in a single intellectual and ideological tradition by identifying similarities in their thought. Although none of the philosophers mentioned came from aristocratic backgrounds, they shared a distaste for the masses and middle classes, a fear of mediocrity, a suspicion of the centralized state, opposition to the commercial spirit and a deep pessimism about the possibility of implementing their goals in the near future. The author of this work also attempts to correct prevalent misconceptions about 19th-century liberalism, and provides a typology of liberalism intended to encourage debate.
