Approaching Infinity series by Chris Eisenlauer (Books 1-2, 6)
Requirements: EPUB / AZW Reader, 1.5MB
Overview: Growing up in the suburbs, I was prone to constant daydreaming. On top of that, I watched way too much TV, which saturated my brain and fueled even more elaborate daydreaming. I’ve always been particularly interested in science fiction and fantasy, and later, horror. Some of my favorite authors are Roger Zelazny, E.E. "Doc" Smith, H.P. Lovecraft, and Edgar Rice Burroughs.
Genre: Fiction, Sci/Fi
#1 – The Artifact Competition
Jav Holson has a time bomb ticking away inside him with one chance to survive: learn the martial art known as the Eighteen Heavenly Claws and win the Artifact Competition. The prize will make him an elite Shade of the Viscain Empire and virtually immortal. There’s just one catch: learning the Eighteen Heavenly Claws. Jav is willing and able, but nobody knows when the time bomb will go off. Undeterred, he practices long past dark every day, enduring heavy gravity training and the not-so-petty abuse of other students. His only distraction is carving stone flowers for the girl he inadvertently put into a coma, and for Mai, who takes over his training. Even as Jav begins to excel, developing a number of unique techniques based on the advanced Approaching Infinity principles, one of his teachers tries to kill him in a fit of prideful anger. Another tries to seduce him, which would be all well and good if Jav hadn’t already fallen for Mai. His every success has a cost and every step along the tightrope path is a hazard, but the competition still lies ahead. For all the challenges his training poses, Jav must still cross fists with the top fighters of the Viscain Empire and risk a double–permanent–loss to ensure his preservation.
#2 – The Gun Golems
The Artifact Competition is over. Jav Holson has won the Kaiser Bones, and just in time, too, as invaders arrive to assault the Root Palace. Somehow, these Gun Golems are the perfect foil for Shades, exacting a terrible toll on the Empire in an embarrassingly short time. Using the Eighteen Heavenly Claws and backed by the Kaiser Bones, Jav quickly proves his worth, dispatching a number of Gun Golems himself—an impressive feat considering the invaders’ origins and purpose. The Shades rally to meet the Gun Golems’ onslaught, but success brings no respite. With the Root Palace in transit between star systems and cut off from the rest of the Empire, a series of impossible crimes further rocks the Palace and threatens the Empire’s future. On an unalterable course, six months from planetfall, Shades and Artifact Competition finalists are being picked off one by one by an unknown force that stalks the Palace, deadly and unseen. Is there a traitor in their midst? Or have they picked up some malevolent passenger? No one knows, but trust is a luxury and nobody is above suspicion. Alone, Jav can do nothing but support his fellows, particularly his friend, Ren Fauer, the newly appointed Director of Imperial Police, and be ready to pit his mastery of the Eighteen Heavenly Claws against whatever it is hiding in the Palace shadows—but will it be enough?
#6 – The Damnation Reprieve
Jav Holson is dead, but not finished. Judgement awaits him, challenging him with the past he’s so far refused to face. All is laid bare—every painful memory, every heinous crime. Running from the truth, as he did before, will result in his total destruction. Embracing it will open up the possibility for retribution and a chance to reenter the fight against the Viscain Empire.
As revelations unfold, the Empire continues its push towards The Place with Many Doors. The Loss Queen’s forces persist, but even with a number of Shades joining her cause, the Empire’s advance seems unstoppable. Jav’s Artifact, the Kaiser Bones, is the key to undoing the Vine, but can he survive judgment to wield them?
