Anti-Hype by Ryan Mooney

Overview: Anti-Hype is the funny and disarming story of the unforgettable and sometimes incorrigible Chandler Goldfinch, or Finch, as he prefers to be called. Finch is an endearing and hyperactive sophomore with a fractured family, two loyal friends, and a fanciful imagination. Prone to trouble, the story begins with Finch in the hospital, after he dares himself to swallow a handful of Xeroin pills, his ADHD medication. As a result of this episode, Finch begins to redirect his energy by going to DIY rock shows and creating a zine with his friends. The story takes place in and around his Long Island hometown, Bay Meadows, and eventually reaches Brooklyn. The zine, “Anti-Hype,” becomes a small sensation and makes some major waves within his conservative community. Along the way, Finch meets a girl, gets picked up by the cops, and tries (unsuccessfully) to avoid encounters with a kid named Boyle. Anti-Hype contrasts grass-roots distribution efforts with winkingly-titled social networks and blogs, and suggests that people can still survive without a cell phone.
