Overview: Initial reports from Wisconsin and South Carolina describe the booms as frighteningly loud, packing enough energy to shake walls and rattle windows.
During the days and weeks that follow, identical sounds reverberate through cities and towns around the United States. Some say they come from the sky. Others claim they rumble up from deep underground. A few argue that the sounds aren’t booms at all but shrill blasts from a celestial horn or the discordant crash of metal on metal.
And scientists are at a loss to explain any of it.
Anomalies in Blue is the story of high school science teacher Andrew Siegel and his diverse class of tenth-graders, who investigate these mysterious sounds and a series of unexplained electrical phenomena that upend the ordered flow of everyday American life and push the nation to the brink of chaos.
They encounter resistance on multiple fronts, from a myopic school principal who can’t see beyond personal ambition, to an American president unable or unwilling to mobilize the resources needed to determine the cause of these baffling events.
But Siegel and his students will not be deterred. Their search for the truth leads to a physics lab located at the bottom of an abandoned iron-ore mine and culminates in a scientific and spiritual journey to the edge of the universe.
