Overview:I am now fifty-two years old. I live in the heart of rural Suffolk. As I sit here at my desk, I can look across the fields from my window to a wood which has been there since the dawn of time. A Roman street once ran across the fields behind my house. There has been a church in the village for a thousand years. When I sit in there, with the current community, I am in a place where Saxons, Normans and Danes once sat, and since them the folk who tilled the fields through the middle ages, who saw Tudor kings and queens, Civil War, Empire and two world wars, the latter of which saw the village dwarfed by an American army camp. It’s probably the timeless feel of this place which feeds my love of history and prompted me to write my ‘Angelcynn’ series.
Genre: Historical Fiction

01 Lord of the Wolf
“I am who I am, what I am, what I know and believe, because of who my people are.” When Wulfhere, the son of a great Angel lord, is orphaned, he knows that his duty is to lead his people and ensure their safety. A hard enough task for a thirteen year old in any age but these are the turbulent times that history would come to know as the Dark Ages.
Against a backdrop of pirate raids, war with the Franks, and a king who would rather see his home in the hands of a more experienced leader of men, Wulfhere has to rebuild his shattered life and claim leadership of his people. Helped by his uncle, and his father’s surviving hearth companions Wulfhere must overcome the hurdles that fate has laid before him. He must prove to the king that he is worthy to inherit his father’s mantle.
02 Icelingas
“This is a new kingdom. It is neither Angel nor Wealh, it takes from both, and it keeps what is good. It is its own land, this is a new people. Icel is making new laws and you warriors will be forging new legends in the days to come. We tell the tales of Offa because he built our kingdom. In future the people of the south lands will probably tell tales of Wulfhere or Edgar or Ceolwulf. We are the Icelingas and we must make our own way in this middle earth!”
The Wolf lord has brought his folk to Britain to make a new home and a new story, but this is a land beyond anything he has ever known. Old traditions are set aside, ancient enemies are now friends, friends can’t be trusted. On all sides are the unknown kingdoms of the Wealh. Can Wulfhere help his friend Icel forge the strong kingdom that they dreamed of or will treachery and the Wealh hurl them back into the sea?
03 The Halls of the Wealh
“They say that you consort with witches, and that your gods have given you the strength and cunning of the wolf and that you drink blood with your gods and witches at the full of the moon.” We all laughed at these revelations but Artorius continued, “I’m serious. The stories of Wulfhere the Grim are many and colourful, my lord. I just felt you might like to know.”
The Angels have joined the maelstrom of post Roman Britain. As tribe fights tribe and new alliances inflame ancient hatred, how will the Angelcynn fit into the confusing patchwork of the British kingdoms? The Combrogi are trying to unite the tribes against the invaders while others court the newcomers to harness their strength. The gods will show Wulfhere the right path. Fate already knows the outcome, why then would a warrior fear that which cannot be changed?
04 Web of Wyrd
The will and might of Rome are broken and the legacy of the great empire is chaos and uncertainty. The legions broke the ancient order of Britain, their foederati warriors diluted the blood and laws of the tribes. Now countless warriors descend on the islands in search of land, wealth and a home for their people. Angels, Saxons, Irish, Jutes and Frisians are joined by the flotsam of a fallen empire. These savage warriors will follow their lords wherever fate leads them, against whoever fate decrees.
Wulfhere has won his kingdom. His name is feared throughout the halls of Britain. Where does fate lead now? What plan does Tiw have for the Wolf Lord? In the confused torment of Britain it is impossible to see where the next enemy will arise. What story will the sisters weave for the Lord of the Wolf, his loved ones and his people?
05 The Wrath of the Gods
‘It is God’s will that this land will be ruled by different peoples and we are his instruments. He has drawn the veil from my eyes and shown me the path which stretches ahead of us, my friend. You and I hold the future of this land in our hands. Think, Wulfhere! Together we have the might to bring peace to this land. To be high kings of Britain!’
Late 5th century Britain. A maelstrom of kingdoms, tribes and religions. Wulfhere has won his kingdom, now he must keep his people safe and lead them to a safe and prosperous future. Who is a friend and who is an enemy?
06 Brytenwealda
The ancient tribes of Britain are doomed. A new age, in which the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxons will struggle for supremacy, is approaching. For Wulfhere the ties of tribe and tradition are fading. He must follow the bidding of his gods in order to prove their power and dominion over the middle earth. He has sworn to stand by his friend, Artorius, in order to maintain order, peace and prosperity for his people. Above all, he must continue on the path which might one day see the Wolf Lord become the foremost of all the kings of Britain. The Brytenwealda.
Murder, ambition and hatred drive his enemies, and his allies, through the confused, painful birth of a new order between the kingdoms of Britain. In order to fulfill his destiny he must appease his gods, hold the kingdoms of the Angelcynn together, and prepare for the cataclysmic battle which will shape the future of all of the peoples of Britain, both Sais and Wealh. Only the sisters know how it will end.
