Overview: Andy Adams was born in Indiana. His parents were Andrew and Elizabeth (Elliott) Adams. As a boy he helped with the cattle and horses on the family farm. During the early 1880s he went to Texas, where he stayed for 10 years, spending much of that time driving cattle on the western trails. In 1890 he tried working as a businessman, but the venture failed, so he tried gold-mining in Colorado and Nevada. In 1894, he settled in Colorado Springs, where he lived until his death. He began writing at the age of 43, publishing his most successful book, The Log of a Cowboy, in 1903. His other works include A Texas Matchmaker (1904), The Outlet (1905), Cattle Brands (1906), Reed Anthony, Cowman: An Autobiography (1907), Wells Brothers (1911), and The Ranch on the Beaver (1927).

The Log of a Cowboy (1903).
The Log of a Cowboy: A Narrative of the Old Trail Days, was published in 1903. Even though it is a fictional book, the story is based exclusively on his personal experiences. He gives listeners a daily description of a cattle drive that he made from Texas to Montana. This authentic first-hand account has been described as "literature’s best account of life as a cowboy," and is still one of the most treasured publications in the western genre, by both pleasure readers and historians.
A Texas Matchmaker (1904).
The story of one young man’s tutelage under a crusty ranchero in 1870s Southern Texas. A fascinating insight into how the cattle business was conducted on a large ranch, as well as the fencing of the free-range west in the 1880s and 90s. The story is more about life on an old ranch, than undying mystery and romance, as the title misleadingly suggests.
The Outlet (1905).
In 1905, The Outlet was published and introduced a rarely explored side of cattle herding, the business side. There was corruption in business all over the country at the time, and this novel revealed many problems that stripped away the layers of glamour that were associated with life in the West. Through the views of the narrator, a young cowboy by the name of Tom Quirk, it shows that cattle ranching was just another means of survival in a dangerous land. The combined worth of the cattle driven in the novel is astounding, and the difficulties that the cattle traders faced, shocked many of the readers.
