Overview: Branch, wrongly exiled from her village for crimes committed against her, hopelessly wanders the hostile Martian badlands. On the brink of starvation, she is captured and enslaved by an unscrupulous lawman named Eastman. Suddenly, Branch’s life is literally tied to Eastman’s—he attaches a collar to her neck that will explode if he dies.
Eastman takes her to Tall Town, a mining settlement where he is summarily nearly killed by the enigmatic, mutated Quinn—the man in charge of Tall Town. Branch’s attempts to save Eastman’s life (to save her own) set off a chain of events that inflame old rivalries between bitter enemies. The entire settlement becomes a hotbed of violence and revenge with Branch at the center.
In the midst of this conflict, Branch’s own violent heritage is called into question. She finds kinship with Quinn, who has been unable to ever express himself without rage. Only with each other are Branch and Quinn able to rise past the inheritance of their broken pasts and find a future, they hope, with one another.
