“Get back inside before they find you,” she whispered. She knew me well enough to hear the strain in my voice, and worried that others might hear us, -but she didn’t need to. They ignored her.
But her caution highlighted my danger. Starvation and a dying world were already trying to kill all of us. And now? The authorities at Evacuation Command might execute me if I was in if I was caught outside the base.
“No,” I said with more confidence than I felt. I glanced back along the crater wall towards base. I half expected to see security pursuing me out onto the lunar surface.
I was alone. If not for the base buried in the lunar crust nearby, it would have been easy to imagine I was alone on a lifeless landscape.
