Overview: In addition to being a writer of radio-dramas and novels, the early BBC’s Lance Sieveking had a witty, satirical sense of humor, and it certainly stands out in his book ‘All Children Must Be Paid For’.
When Ronald Beeches returns from America and brings up the subject of England’s falling birth-rate, while other countries populations are multiplying, and according to Beeches, places like Germany are even paying families money to have more children, his attentive friend Lord Downacre has the glorious epiphany that unless England starts having more babies soon, there wont be enough people to to fight the next war… with whomever it might be. And he must shine the light and show the way… AT ONCE!
From there the story soon becomes a madcap series of disruptive committee meetings and champagne-laden parties as Lord Downacre gets more and more carried away with his mission to save England. And meandering throughout the chapter’s paragraphs, we get those wry, ‘getting-clear-off-the-subject’ comments by Mister Sieveking.
The well-timed clever satire coupled with the bizarre abstract illustrations of Pearl Binder really make this rare work worth re-publishing and reading for the first time in nearly a century.
