Overview: Alan Rawlinson joined the RAAF in 1938 and completed his training just before World War 2 began. He departed for war service in 1940 as a fighter pilot in 3 Squadron RAAFand took part in the first air to air combat by the RAAF in the North African campaign. He flew Gladiators, Gauntlets, Hurricanes and Tomahawks against the Italians, Vichy French and Germans, was awarded the DFC and Bar, and became squadron commander in late 1941. He commanded an air firing school before returning to Australia to a posting at RAAF HQ. In 1943 he raised 79 Squadron RAAF and took it to the New Guinea war zone. He had further staff postings and commanded the parachute training unit, before departing again to the war zone in 1945 as a Group Captain. After the war he had a distinguished career in the RAF, with jets and missiles, and retired to live in Australia.
