Unsure if who they can trust, the friends pledge to stick together, but after a trusted teacher reveals herself to have turned to the dark side of magic, Ana comes to question everything she ever understood about the hallowed academy.
Can the friends overcome the carefully laid illusions, and burn away all of the secrets and lies that seek to corrupt the academy and its students?
3. The Outcasts – "My friends are vulnerable, but I can protect them."
As everyone at the Academy goes about their lives without the faintest knowledge of the darkness that exists around them – and the crimes of a certain professor – Ana finds herself and Fyrenza entered into a field day within the academy. It’s an opportunity to test herself and her phoenix against the experienced dragon riders, and Fyrenza can hardly contain her excitement.
When Fyrenza is injured in an exercise, however, Ana is left without one more line of defence, and crucially, the only thing keeping her in high regard at the academy.
Meanwhile, Ginger’s unpredictable powers are undiminished. She’s capable of untold power, and undoubtedly will be wanted dead or alive for it. Ana knows they have to treat her carefully, and protect her at all costs.
As the malevolent Dove and her fawning friends pursue and bully Ana and Ginger, unforeseen consequences befall her, and Ana is forced to both treat Dove’s wounds, and become her unlikely captor until she promises never to tell of Ginger’s remarkable but dangerous powers.
With Professor Ionadi still hiding in the shadows, waiting to strike, how long can Ana keep everyone she holds dear safe?
4. The Rebirth – “Whatever it takes, I’ll find Fyrenza again.”
After spending all of her time hitchhiking, stowing away, and scouring the region for any trace of her bonded phoenix, Ana is exhausted. With the school year soon drawing to a close, she has a lot on her mind, and rescuing Fyrenza surely has to come first.
But when a fire in Ionadi’s old office sparks an investigation, Ana seems to be on the hook for it, and before long both she and Pepin are the prime suspects. With more than a few secrets of her own to reveal, Ana and the academy are set on a collision course.
And after finally establishing contact with Fyrenza, Ana learns the dark truth behind The Knowing’s plans for the fledgling phoenix. She soon hatches a plan to save her. And her friends won’t see her go it alone…
5. The Homecoming – “Friends in peril, exams on the horizon, and a phoenix not yet ready to protect me; can I pull through?”
For Ana and her friends, rescuing Fyrenza came at great cost: an injury to a Aelred, and Ginger arrested and imprisoned by the anti-magic authorities. And what’s more, Fyrenza will take time to recover since her rebirth, leaving Ana especially vulnerable in the meantime.
That’d be enough to contend with, without the dread-inspiring prospect of exams around the corner, and if Ana fails, she’ll be out of the academy for good! Never in Ana’s life have things felt lower, or more desperate.
However, having learned some revelatory facts about her late mother, Ana decides on a trip home – slipping away from the protection of the academy – to see her father once again, and perhaps uncover some home truths…
