The pyrotechnically gifted don’t find much love in the public sector, either. While there’s no rule in the maintenance division handbook prohibiting the summoning of raging firestorms, the mayor really prefers city employees to stick to sweeping the streets and watering flowers.
Thus, there’s simply not much demand for a mage like Rialta in the booming city of Laelynn.
She could always join the Questers’ Guild: the illustrious marketplace where the citizens of Laelynn pay clerics, thieves, mercenaries—and yes, even mages—to complete quests on their behalf. But Rialta is a pragmatic young woman. She knows that if she chose a life of adventuring, glory and riches would come with the possibility of being stabbed in a seedy inn, or drowned at the bottom of a lake hidden in an ancient cavern, or getting food poisoning from an expired sandwich. She simply values her safety too much to be caught up in any of that.
Rialta has a change of heart, however, when she loses her job as a cook and needs money fast. She joins forces with Remmy, an inept cleric with a heart of gold, and John, a burly, headstrong thief, to take on quests for some quick cash. But the trio gets careless, falling for a trap disguised as a lucrative job offer. When they’re marooned within another dimension, Rialta realizes she’ll need to navigate this strange new world with the utmost care if she ever plans to make it home alive.
Unfortunately for her, John and Remmy have a different approach.
