Overview: Miss Elizabeth Bennet had no idea what awaited her as she and the Gardiners went into Derbyshire and visited Lambton, the small village that had been her Aunt Madeline’s girlhood home. Mrs. Gardiner had not been back for many years and after visiting with old friends the first two days, the threesome set off from Lambton to tour Pemberley, which was five miles away. Pemberley was the grandest of the great estates in the county, and because their carriage had a serious accident, the visitors were moved to the great house to recover and were guests of the owner, Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy.
Elizabeth was a gentleman’s daughter, but she had never seen such beauty as she saw at Pemberley. She was impressed with all she saw and the owner was kind and attentive to her. He was also very handsome and Elizabeth knew she must be careful. Her father had warned her before that great men often have their way with young women, but she thought this man was different.
The visitors and the owner developed a friendship during their stay at Pemberley. Elizabeth lived in Hertfordshire, far from Derbyshire, and knew it was doubtful that she would ever see the man again. She was a realist and understood her place in society. Mr. Darcy was friendly, but he would never be interested in aligning with a woman such as her, with her little money and lack of connections. Though she thought that, she saw how well they got on and that he was as attracted to her as she was to him.
