A Mirror for Ruffians: A Gallery of Scoundrels from Sir Henry Morgan to Hitler by Philip Lindsay
Requirements: .PDF reader, 36.3 MB
Overview: Trepanning the Ruffian: He is a splendid creature, the ruffian. Splendid at least in his own eyes, he can see little beyond the glory that surrounds him; all is puny beside his strength, mankind but fodder for his lusts. His belief in himself, the chosen of God, is such that he can face the most tremendous perils and pass through unharmed. For there is a magic about him so that even death itself seems to stand aside before his unconquerable courage; yet it is not truly courage because the ruffian knows that he has nothing to fear. Being under the wings of dark angels, guided by protective stars, he feels that until he has taken all that life can give, all that he justly demands, he cannot die except by some strange accident. Can one applaud Achilles slashing down the Trojans when his heel is armoured? Somewhere in every ruffian lurks this little chink that leaves him open to a wound, but it is so hidden, so small a thing that if he can but mask it he is safe.
