A Long Cold War : A Chronology of American Life and Culture 1945 to 1991 by Jerry Carrier
Requirements: .PDF reader, 2.1 MB
Overview: This is a cultural history of the Cold War from 1945-1991, written in an almanac or journal form. It is a reference to give the reader a complete sense of what it would have been like to live in these times as they happened. These were the headlines of the day, the fads, the weather and a few sporting events. Most entries are important in shaping American culture, however some entries are about forgotten fads or facts that seemed important at the time but that have faded in importance now. This book can be used as a historical reference, timeline or as a good read for the nostalgic or casual reader. It can be read in its entirety, in sequence or in parts, or year by year to get a sense of the specific times.

Significant events (sometimes two or three per date) are recorded in mostly one or two sentences, as you may have read the headlines at the time. Some major events are expanded to a paragraph or a page to give the reader a sense of their complexity, impact and their importance. The entries include scientific, political, cultural, military, sports, inventions, fads, major calamities and weather events. Some dates have no entries because the author determined that no significant events or interesting trivia took place. The events included are purely the judgment of the author. At the end of each year there is an economic summary of consumer prices and incomes for that year and there are also summaries of the movies, radio/television, music and literature.

This is the story of America at her peak, competing with the USSR and China while enjoying a casual and affluent lifestyle that looked like an attractive model to many people around the world. This book gives a detailed look daily American life during those times.
