Overview: On the west bank of the majestic Hudson River Valley of eastern New York State, just an hour north of ‘the city that never sleeps,’ sits the sometimes sleepy, and frequently tranquil, town of New Windsor.
Computers were largely the stuff of books, movies, and television shows in the late-60’s, but a concentration of high-tech companies made their home in the Hudson Valley back then, including two major IBM computer manufacturing facilities in Poughkeepsie and East Fishkill. The infusion of scientists and industrialists into the local citizenry gave the population of the Hudson Valley a greater technological acquaintance than might be found elsewhere at that time.
Like most boys his age, Tom was an avid sci-fi devotee. When the local school district announced that a course in computer programming was being added to the night-school syllabus, he leapt at the opportunity to participate in the great adventure. Although still a high school student, Tom enrolled immediately. Such classes weren’t yet even being planned for the daytime curriculum offerings. He embraced the course, taught by a computer programmer from a local financial institution, and decided to pursue a career in the field of Data Processing. The passé nomenclature has since been replaced by the voguish descriptor of ‘Information Technology,’ but the occupation remains true to its roots.
