A Frequent Traveller’s Guide to Jovan by Senna Black (Volume 1 and 2)

Overview: Senna Black is Australian, born and bred. For the last ten years or so, Senna has been writing on and off, in various formats, and her short stories, long stories, fanfic and role play characters are scattered across many sites and pseudonyms on the internet. These days she devotes herself more or less exclusively to original fiction, either fantasy or historical. She particularly likes to write characters who make sensible life choices, no matter how outlandish the situation they may be in. She likes romances where the characters would have something in common to talk about over tea, and plots where nobody does anything flagrantly against their interest for no reason. She thinks a fantastic setting is no excuse for anyone being silly.
Genre: Fantasy
A Frequent Traveller’s Guide to Jovan Volume 1: Since the death of their brother the Emperor Dolmus brought the royal brothers Valentin and Cassius back to Monsilys, capital of the great Jovani Empire, Valentin has cured the boredom of court life with poppy-sap and women, while for Cassius the remedy has been ale and the result much the same. Then an ill-fated duel causes their niece the Empress to send them to Gallica to deal with a problem there, and they find themselves drawn ever more back into the world of Jovani politics: a world their brother banished them from seventeen years earlier.
As Valentin veers from disaster to disaster, always running from his past and a life he would prefer to forget, Cassius is fascinated by a damaged pleasure slave he rescues from a brothel in Sha-Pensei. Valentin’s weapon is sly diplomacy, while Cassius prefers the honesty of the sword, but will either be enough to protect Jovan, and themselves?
A Frequent Traveller’s Guide to Jovan Volume 2: Valentin and Cassius, uncles to the empress of Jovan, are recalled from exile only to be sent to Ilas. The Ilasian princess Isobel has fled to her homeland after killing her Veribian husband, and the Veribians have sent an armada to exact revenge. Valentin once courted Isobel, but those days are long past, and now Ilas begs Jovan’s help to resolve the standoff without bloodshed.
As one crisis is resolved another arises. Back in the capital, Valentin is haunted by the women he has loved, and takes up with a young girl from the docks, while Cassius loses himself in tactics and training. In the background lurks the dark figure of Magnus the Papirian, who holds in his hands the secret of the crime which led Valentin and Cassius to be banished eighteen years before.
