A Dance to the Music of Time series (#3,8) by Anthony Powell
Requirements: ePUB / MOBI Reader, 2.3 MB
Overview: A Dance to the Music of Time is a twelve-volume cycle of novels by Anthony Powell, inspired by the painting of the same name by Nicolas Poussin. One of the longest works of fiction in literature, it was published between 1951 and 1975 to critical acclaim. The story is an often comic examination of movements and manners, power and passivity in English political, cultural and military life in the mid 20th century. The sequence is narrated by Nick Jenkins in the form of his reminiscences. Over the course of the following volumes, he recalls the people he met over the previous half a century. Little is told of Jenkins’s personal life beyond his encounters with the great and the bad, with events, such as his wife’s miscarriage, only being related in conversation with the principal characters.
Genre: General Fiction, Classics

#3 – The Acceptance World: Set in the Great Depression of 1931-32. The Acceptance World invites us once again to join Nicholas Jenkins and his friends in their dance to the music of time.

#8 – The Soldier’s Art: The eighth volume, The Soldier’s Art (1966), finds Nick in the thankless position of assistant to a rapidly rising Major Widmerpool. The disruptions of war throw up other familiar faces as well: Charles Stringham, heroically emerging from alcoholism but a mere shadow of his former self; Hugh Moreland, his marriage broken, himself nearly so. As the Blitz intensifies, the war’s toll mounts; the fates are claiming their own, and many friends will not be seen again.
