Kaitangata Twitch: The brooding island of Kaitangata lies just across the water from Meredith’s home. It seems to have a supernatural presence, a will and a voice of its own, although only Meredith can hear it. Can Meredith save the island from an unscrupulous developer? How could the dreamer of the family succeed where grown-ups have failed? Only Kaitangata can tell…
Alchemy: What happens when a class assignment becomes a war of magic versus free will? When Roland’s teacher gives him an unusual assignment instead of a punishment for shoplifting, he thinks he is home free. All he has to do is find out what he can about a classmate, Jess Ferret, and report back to his teacher. But there is something less than straightforward about this request, and the more Roland learns about Jess, the more confused he becomes. Her house is too tidy, her parents are never home, strange books line the bookshelves, and, most intriguing of all, Jess is studying alchemy. Roland struggles with these questions — and with a sense that if he doesn’t uncover the answers soon, something drastic will happen. When a sinister magician from Roland’s past gets involved in the mystery, Roland realizes that he is trapped in a dangerous web of magic, power, and greed — and there might be no way out.
Aliens in the Family: Jake Raven, expecting to dislike her new stepsister and stepbrother, ends up helping them protect an alien from another dimension as he flees from mysterious pursuers with the ability to alter time.
Mister Whistler: A hilarious, lively picture book. Mister Whistler always has a song in his head and a dance in his legs. But when he has to catch the train, he is so distracted he loses his ticket-and has to dance his way out of his clothes to find it. The author, Margaret Mahy, received the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen Award in 2006.
Organ Music: One moment the doorway had been dark and empty. The next, someone was there, looking at David and Harley. A girl older than they were – 16 or 17, perhaps – hugging around her a disintegrating leather jacket that fell almost to her knees. The boys stared at her, and she stared at them. Then she disappeared.
The Christmas Tree Tangle: In a small village, a kitten has climbed the Christmas tree. First the cat goes to the kitten’s rescue, then the dog, then the goat, then the pigs–but they all get stuck in the tree! How the kitten and her "rescuers" are finally rescued makes for a delightfully funny and lively conclusion.
The Gargling Gorilla: Brave Tim agrees to look after Rosa’s pets. He isn’t afraid of vultures or wolfhounds, or even giant rabbits. But he isn’t so sure about the gorilla, gargling in the kitchen!
The Great White Man-Eating Shark: Greedy to have the cove where he swims all to himself, Norvin, who looks a bit like a shark, pretends to be one, scaring off the other swimmers and leaving him in happy aquatic solitude–until he is discovered by an amorous female shark.
The Riddle of the Frozen Phantom: Sophie Sapwood, daughter of the famous explorer, Bonniface Sapwood, discovers a whalebone pendant hidden at the back of her chest of drawers. At the same time, deep in the frozen wastes of the Antarctic, the ghost of Captain Cathcardo awakens from an ancient sleep, trapped in the Antarctic on his ship, The Riddle. His three cries for "Help" travel through the stratosphere to three different sets of ears – famous explorer Bonniface Sapwood, renowned naturalist Corona Wottley and oily villain Rancid Swarthy – descendant of Escher Black who was first mate on the Riddle. All three parties immediately organise trips to the Antarctic – all with the same goal in mind (solving the mystery of the Riddle) but each with very different intentions.
