Overview: Helen Clark MacInnes (October 7, 1907 – September 20, 1985)[1] was a Scottish-American author of 21 espionage novels. Her husband, Gilbert Highet, served as an MI6 British intelligence agent, in addition to working as a classics scholar. Obviously, her husband’s work in intelligence became a significant influence on the subject matter of MacInnes espionage thrillers. MacInnes’s Cold War writing, in particular, through the images that hide the grim reality of betrayal, is a literary extension of George Orwell. Her writing also reflects an affinity for Arthur Koestler and Rebecca West, with her strong opposition to any form of tyranny and totalitarianism.
