Genre: Comics
Good Night, Planet:
When you go off to sleep, your toys go out to play. After a long day of jumping in leaves and reading her favorite books, this little girl is worn out, but her favorite stuffed animal, Planet, is just getting started. Planet befriends a dog, gobbles a cookie and takes a leap into the unknown. This tender, gorgeous tale by the internationally renowned cartoonist Liniers will reveal to early readers the wonders that exist at night, in secret, after they close their eyes.
Macanudo: Welcome to Elsewhere:
In the spirit of Calvin and Hobbes, Mutts and Krazy Kat, Liniers uses a shifting cast of children, talking animals, imaginary monsters, sensitive robots, occasional elves and anthropomorphized objects to perform gags, philosophize, muse on nature and engage in surreal, artistic flights of fancy. With delicate, calligraphic pen work and understated watercolors, the comic skips lightly from style to style and subject to subject, as Liniers allows his imagination and observational humor free reign. Jokes about domestic life, imagined scenarios of historical figures, Cthulu showing up to Tinder dates, characters simply enjoying a pastoral sunset, the puncturing of pop-culture stalwarts: Macanudo is a boundless canvas for its author’s humane and delightfully off-kilter view of the world, in a way few comic strips have ever even attempted.
The Big Wet Balloon:
When her sister Clemmie refuses to play in the rain, Matilda wants to teach her the delights of a wet Saturday. They end up learning an unforgettable lesson.
What There is Before There is Anything There: A Scary Story:
Every night when his parents turn off the light, strange creatures descend from the black space where the ceiling used to be. First comes one, then another and then more and more. They stand all around him, staring and not saying a word. And then, worst of all, comes the dark shapeless one that tells him: "I am what there is before there is anything there."
Written and Drawn by Henrietta:
Reading books is fun. But what about making them? Armed with new colored pencils, Henrietta’s ready to try. Peek over her shoulder as she draws the story of a brave young girl, a three-headed monster and an impossibly wide world of adventure. Whether read aloud to a toddler or discovered by a young reader, Liniers’ celebration of the creative process is sure to make everyone want to bring out their pencils.
