Overview: Robert Silverberg was born in New York City, attended high school in Brooklyn, and graduated with a B.A. in English literature from Columbia University in 1956. During his university years he began publishing actively in science fiction and received a Hugo Award in 1956 as the Most Promising Science Fiction Author of 1955. This prestigious award, which he received at a remarkably young age, attested to his stature among science-fiction authors and fans. He lived in New York City in a mansion which formerly belonged to Mayor Fiorello Henry La Guardia until the early 1970s, when he moved to his current residence in Oakland, California, with his wife Barbara Brown, whom he had married in 1956. When not involved in science fiction, he enjoys gardening, especially raising fuchsias and cacti, and traveling. His special interests include contemporary literature and music and medieval geography. Most science-fiction authors and readers consider Robert Silverberg to be one of the most important contemporary authors in the field.
Genre: Sci-Fi/Fantasy
At Winter’s End: After a recurrence of the cataclysm that killed off the dinosaurs and a resulting Long Winter of 700,000 years, the eventual New Springtime sees only two of the far future Earth’s original Six Peoples emerge from their deep cocoons: the resilient, insect-like hjjk-folk and the simian tribes who regard themselves as heirs to humanity. Young Hresh-full-of-questions is a member of one of the latter, a small band that must radically change its ancient rituals and taboos to adapt to their new life. Taking up temporary residence in the shell of a once great city, the group fearfully meets another people, is itself torn in half by rivalry and, through Hresh, achieves a new realization of who they are. This solid, dramatic novel expands on a favorite motif of Silverberg’s: the mixed terrors and pleasures of freedom, of going out into the wider world without guide, map or a sure sense of one’s own capabilities.
Starborne: In Starborne, Silverberg takes the Utopia theme and turns it on its head. The scene is Earth many centuries in the future, where all of life’s problems have been solved. But while humanity may be well fed, amply clothed, in perfect health, and rich beyond imagination, people are bored nearly to death. To bring a little spark back into the lives of humankind, the people of Earth band together to build a starship and begin the search for habitable planets in the rest of the universe.
The Masks of Time: Vornan-19 fell from the sky, naked, and landed on the Spanish steps in Rome on Christmas afternoon toward the end of the Millennium. And for Leo Garfield things would never be the same. For he is an acknowledged expert in the time reversal properties of sub-atomic particles… and Vornan-19 claims to come from far in the future. Whether or not he is telling the truth, a nervous and edgy world accepts the charming and magnetically charismatic Vornan as some kind of messiah. Even Garfield and his fellow scientists fall under Vornan’s spell. But, has he really traveled across time — or is he just a charlatan and a fraud? A compassionate and powerful novel worthy of comparison to Stranger in a Strange Land.
Those Who Watch: The novel concerns a trio of alien explorers, each one surgically altered so that they outwardly appear human, who find themselves separated, and permanently stranded on Earth, after their ship explodes while hovering in low orbit. Each of the aliens is injured during the accident, and all are taken in and nursed back to health by kindly human beings.
