Overview: Bradley Clayton Denton (born 1958) is an American science fiction author. He has also written other types of fiction, such as the black comedy of his novel Blackburn, about a sympathetic serial killer.
Genre: Horror, Science Fiction
Blackburn: Blackburn is a serial killer. But, like the rest of us, he confronts the same hypocrisies and frustrations of the world and, unable to help himself, or at the mercy of circumstance, he crosses a dangerous threshold–and he kills. In this novel, we meet many of his twenty-one victims: law enforcers, writers, adulterers, auto mechanics, and other liars. And each crime reveals another side of his psyche . . . and his disturbing rationale for murder.
One Day Closer to Death: Eight Stabs at Immortality:"All the stories in this book," Denton says, "harassed me into writing them, but some of them literally gave me nightmares until I set them down on paper." One Day Closer to Death: Eight Stabs at Immortality is about living in the face of death–the toll it takes, the jokes we make. Each story is a unique dark gem that can’t be summarized by a list of phrases–a self-destructive performance artist, the coyote "Trickster" of legend, black-pajama-wearing demons in a field of sorghum, Lenny Bruce and John Belushi in the afterlife–but those snatches at least hint at the variety of themes. What makes the book, though, is how Denton’s earnest tone, as flat as the prairies of his childhood, can deliver deadpan humor in one sentence, and a serious, disturbing question in the next.
Wrack and Roll: This book is set in an Alternate America. When President Franklin Roosevelt choked to death on a chicken bone in 1933, it signaled the start of a brave new world – a world in which America would ally with the USSR against the threat of the Anglo-Chinese Alliance – a world where the death on the Moon of rock superstar Bitch Alice sparked a Wracker explosion that would would obliterate America’s space programme and leave Straight and Wracker alike at the mercy of their enemies’ nuclear bomb-loaded station.
