Overview: Leigh Brackett, the much-loved Queen of Space Opera, could also turn her hand to the hard-boiled detective genre. Her first novel, No Good from a Corpse (1944), prompted Howard Hawks to sign her up to work on the screenplay of The Big Sleep. The saltier dialogue seems to have been the work of Miss B, and not her illustrious co-scripter William Faulkner. It doubtless also lead to her being chosen to ‘ghost-write’ George Sanders’ second novel, Stranger at Home (1946). Her pulp magazine stories from this period were collected together with No Good for a Corpse and Others in 1999.
She returned to crime scene a decade later with An Eye for an Eye (1957), which was the basis for the television series Markham. The same year saw The Tiger Among Us, which was filmed as 13 West Street. Her last such novel was Silent Partner (1969).
Genre: Crime/Thriller

The Tiger Among Us: Walter Sherris, an ordinary suburban husband and father, is the victim of a brutal beating- by a bunch of boys- which sends him to the hospital, almost costs him his wife, and leaves him with an obdurate, obsessive desire for their identification- and apprehension. As the weeks pass, and the police prove ineffectual, Sherris hires a detective who is killed and he in repeatedly victimized before his search ends in safety for the community and for his family… A topical theme, the prevalence of casual violence- and its contagion-is an effective object lesson.

Eye for an Eye: Ben Forbes’ wife is supposed to pick him up from his law office at five o’clock. It’s their daily routine. Only it’s past five-thirty, and she’s late. Time passes. She still doesn’t show. Now he’s getting plenty nervous. The police search his home, but there is no sign whatsoever of her. Nary a clue as to where she might have gone. Until a phone call brings terror into Ben’s life. Leigh Brackett has written a terrific novel. Well-paced. That moves toward a tense and exciting climax.

Silent Partner: Tony Wales is the silent and unseeing partner of one Karim Hassani (middle Eastern imports–grenades and small arms) and when he insists on introducing Harvey Martin, a third old friend, into the firm, Martin is quickly eliminated. Prompted by the dead man’s girl, Tony tries to answer some of the questions she has asked. . . . Colorful as a travel brochure and you’ll get there twice as fast.
