Land of Milk and Honey
A powerful story based on the real-life experiences of hundreds of British children who were sent as war refugees to New Zealand and Australia during the Second World War. Fourteen-year-old Jake suffers cruelly at the hands of a rural family, only to be offered sanctuary and eventual redemption by the elderly town doctor, Mac. His story is complex, dealing graphically with issues of community attitudes to violence and discipline and Jake’s eventual response to his treatment is not what you might expect. Not a conventional ‘morality’ tale by any means, Taylor deals masterfully with the reality of revenge and retribution, handling the issues with skill. Gritty, and definitely not for younger readers, the story of Jake contains vivid descriptions of violence and cruelty to animals that need maturity to handle.
At the Big Red Rooster
Ever had to be a pall bearer? Gone pig hunting with a desperate uncle? Had to dance with a giantess in public? Had the world’s most boring job? Been ripped off by a little old lady? These stories will take you places you’ll never want to visit in real life – the first dance to the first funeral to the first job and the first sexual experience. well, okay, maybe that last one. This is a great collection of the best of Taylor’s numerous short stories from over 25 years’ writing. Funny, sad, dramatic and sometimes frightening, they are written in a variety of narrative styles, making them ideal for classroom study. A well overdue volume from one of our foremost writers for young adults.
Scarface and the Angel
A powerful young adult novel about an unlikely friendship that helps a young man heal emotional and physical scars. "There are two sides to Damon. You can see it in his face. Good Face. Bad Face. But which is the true Damon? The one who strikes out and asks questions later? Or the one who acts out of kindness? When Esther enters Damon’s life, he finds his mask beginning to slip. And even he doesn’t know what he’ll find behind it." An elderly woman, Esther, is gypsy-ish and lives as a squatter. A young man, Damon has a facial scar caused when he was in a car accident. He’s angry and isolated and wears a mask as both a protection and a barrier. Both he and Esther are outsiders. When they meet and build a friendship he learns about physical scars and emotional scars; about how, as the old adage goes, ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’ and also how ‘beauty is only skin deep but ugliness goes right to the bone’.This gripping novel by an award-winning writer also explores disabilities – how some may be overcome, accepted and, in some cases, put towards a positive end.
