Overview: Nel’s adventure into writing a novel was a strange one. "The Apprentice Queen" seems to have arrived out of the blue, complete, almost as a package, and she has no idea where it came from. She is far more interested in finding if you felt the same strange inspiration in the reading as she did in the writing.

The Book of Tamar
Now seen through the eyes of the young woman who became the unwilling catalyst to cruel events – incest, murder, and war, this is the controversial retelling of the epic of Absalom. Tamar, daughter of the famous King David, is raped by her half-brother. Although angered, David does nothing. Tamar’s full-brother Absalom is outraged over the crime and the King’s inaction. Absalom and his mother Makha plot revenge. While this turmoil unfolds, Bathsheba (David’s most favored wife) quietly maneuvers to have her son Solomon inherit the throne, bypassing Absalom and the older brothers. Tamar loves her family above all others and is horrified to see her family’s quarrel escalate out of control. She bravely struggles to prevent the clash from degenerating into civil war and undertakes a remarkable journey on foot to find the King. Her companion Hana accompanies her, disguised as a warrior to protect Tamar. But she cannot prevent the tragic denouement. As her world crumbles about her, Tamar keeps focus and has personal triumph in the end. After three thousand years, Tamar tells the story in her own words. The novel is an interesting study of two charismatic leaders who were themselves very flawed personalities, about the anguish within a family that was torn apart by their clash, and about a mother and daughter, whose love for each other is strained by their differing loyalties.

Sekma
A vicious young woman rises to become more powerful than the King, her husband. Neferkara, a slave and handmaiden, tells the story of how the young Princess Sekma amasses power through intrigue, manipulation, and murder, and by her a strong influence over her husband, Prince Amun. Sekma and her accomplices relentlessly eliminate anyone who stands between her husband and the throne, and when her husband becomes King, young Queen Sekma rules by dominating the King, a weak, unintelligent member of the Royalty. Neferkara, while watching all this in dismay, befriends Meritaten, another slave woman. The two become close friends and then lovers. Queen Sekma, using her husband as a puppet, rules Egypt with an iron fist, however Neferkara has to admit that she is an effective and strong ruler – the kingdom is stabilized and the government becomes efficient. A day comes when Sekma commands Neferkara to perform an unspeakable act or face death. Neferkara thinks carefully and finds a third possibility.

The Apprentice Queen
A queen of ancient Egypt is forced to choose between her only son and her lover who is the son’s wife. This is a story of three powerful women of ancient Egypt. Old Queen Sekma gains control of the kingdom through intrigue, maneuvering and murder, and ruthlessly rules from behind the scenes. Mitti, a girl taken from her family at ten years of age, becomes Sekma’s unwilling apprentice and is coerced into becoming Sekma’s protégé and to learn power politics. Sekma manipulates the lives of the people of Egypt and carries on a bizarre breeding program for the royalty, and forces Mitti to bear a child by a man of Sekma’s choosing. Later, Mitti becomes queen through marriage to an incompetent king. Nyserra, a young noble woman, is chosen to marry Mitti’s son, but Mitti and Nyserra fall in love. They both realize their love is forbidden, but their love is too strong to deny. Time passes; politics, intrigues, and manipulations occur; plots and treachery are always a danger. Sekma loses power to Mitti. A day comes when Nyserra and Mitti, who still love each other deeply, become political enemies. Mitti is faced with a terrible choice. In the end Mitti comes to understand why the old Queen Sekma was as ruthless as she was, and arrives at a kind of admiration for her.
