Overview: John Fante (April 8, 1909 – May 8, 1983) was an American novelist, short story writer and screenwriter of Italian descent. He is perhaps best known for his work Ask the Dust, a semi-autobiograpical novel about life in and around Los Angeles, California, which was the third in a series of four novels, published between 1938 and 1985, that are now collectively called "The Bandini Quartet". He also wrote several other books, stories and screenplays, including the 1957 film Full of Life, based on his 1952 novel by that name.

He is known to be one of the first writers to portray the tough times faced by many writers in L.A. His work and style has influenced such similar authors as "Poet Laureate of Skid Row" Charles Bukowski and influential beat writer Jack Kerouac. He was proclaimed by Time Out magazine as one of Americas “criminally neglected writers."

The Brotherhood of the Grape
Henry Molise, a 50 year old, successful writer, returns to the family home to help with the latest drama; his aging parents want to divorce. Henry’s tyrannical, brick laying father, Nick, though weak and alcoholic, can still strike fear into the hearts of his sons. His mother, though ill and devout to her Catholicism, still has the power to comfort and confuse her children. This is typical of Fante’s novels, it’s autobiographical, and brimming with love, death, violence and religion. Writing with great passion Fante powerfully hits home the damage family can wreck upon us all.

The Wine of Youth (also published as Dago Red)
Wryly comic, intensely evocative, often deeply moving, most of these stories explore the growing up of young Italian Americans in the state of Colorado.

We meet larger-than-life adults and follow their actions through their children’s uncomprehending eyes; we grapple with the Catholic view of sin, confession and absolution; we share the joys, the upsets, the embarassments of childhood in a Midwestern immigrant community.

Full of Life
In the definitive biography of John Fante, English and film studies professor Stephen Cooper explores the life of a man whose muse was Los Angeles.
