Overview: Hammond Innes, Ralph Hammond Innes CBE (1913 – 1998) was a British novelist who wrote over 30 novels, as well as children’s and travel books.
Four of his early novels were adapted into films. Innes’ great love and experience of the sea, as an experienced yachtsman, was reflected in many of his novels. He and his wife both travelled in and raced their yachts Triune of Troy and Mary Deare. They lived together in Suffolk for many years, in the village of Kersey. At his death he left the bulk of his estate to the Association of Sea Training Organisations, to enable others to gain training and experience in sailing the element he loved.
In 1978 he was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) for his services to literature.
