Overview: Erich Anton Paul von Däniken (/ˈɛrɨk fɒn ˈdɛnɨkɨn/; German: [ˈeːʁɪç fɔn ˈdɛːnɪkən]; born 14 April 1935) is a Swiss author of several books which make pseudoscientific claims about extraterrestrial influences on early human culture, including the best-selling Chariots of the Gods?, published in 1968. Däniken is one of the main figures responsible for popularizing the "paleo-contact" and ancient astronauts hypotheses. The ideas put forth in his books are rejected by scientists and academics, who categorize his work as pseudohistory and pseudoarchaeology.

Chariots of the Gods?: Was God an Astronaut?
Erich von Däniken’sChariots of the Gods is a significant cultural symptom. Not the 1st book claiming ancient Earth was visited by aliens, this bestseller was a marketing success, inspiring many equally uninformed books & films, including The Eyes of the Sphinx sequel. Here’s where it began–his theories of early alien encounters based on his "studies" of ancient ruins, lost cities, potential spaceports & "facts" suggesting extraterrestrial interventions. He believes we’re such galactic pioneers’ descendants & thinks archeological discoveries prove it: an alien astronaut in a pyramid; 1000-year-old space charts; Incan & Egyptian computer astronomy; a map of land beneath Antarctic ice; a huge Andean spaceport. Includes photos supposedly documenting humanity’s 1st alien contact at civilization’s dawn.

Return To The Stars
In this follow up to Chariots of the Gods Daniken looks for evidence of aliens’ past visits to earth by examining archaeology. Many cultures from the past show rays projecting from the heads of the people they portray. Large carved rocks are hard to explain. Using technology of the time they would have been very tedious to erect.

Throughout the book Daniken asks, "How could they do this without help from aliens?" or "Is this a carving of an alien?" Sometimes his analysis of what he finds is way off, as when he describes a carving of a person inside a carved circular decoration and captions it as a person in a "spherical spaceship" Art historians can have a laugh at Daniken’s expense.

There is good archaeology here. The book is a fast read with many illustrations to back up points.

Miracles of the Gods
To establish my hypothesis of the visit of extraterrestrial beings to our globe I drew a
great deal of information from mythology. This store of knowledge from the old
chronicles is fascinating because it preserved for mankind Facts with implications
whose meaning and significance the writer could not recognize in his time. As far as
contacts between terrestrial and extraterrestrial beings are concerned, mythology is a
treasure trove with more than a little importance.
