The Fire Spirits: This book was originally written in 1923 and concerns the war roiling in the Tyrol a hundred years earlier. It concerns a young aristocrat who inherits a house in a small village and travels to see it. He becomes embroiled in the politics of the time and area, not to mention several of the women he meets, and hears about the mysterious "Fire Spirits" who haunt the solstice. The book is amazingly frank about sex and class and will draw the reader into the era as well as the plot. Cited as one of the thirteen best non-supernatural horror novels by Karl Edward Wagner, The Fire Spirits is arguably the rarest book on the famous Wagner List. Out of print in any form for over eighty years, this is a volume that tops the ‘want list’ of many a serious horror collector. The history of the first publication of this 1923 novel by Paul Busson explains why it has been one of the rarest books of its kind. John Pelan gives you the history in his introduction and it may prepare you for one of the most fascinating and frank stories to come from the Tyrol.
The Man Who Was Born Again: Paul Busson’s legendary tale of the Baron Melchior. This grim account begins with its hero losing his head during the French Revolution, and really picks up from there, with the good Baron, through swashbuckling and amorous activities, finally becoming the master of death itself.
