Overview: I grew up in Oregon but have lived all over—D.C., Virginia, Maryland, London,
Wyoming. My father was an FBI agent and I was a bureau kid, which is similar to being an army brat. You tend to spend your time with other bureau kids and get transferred around a lot, though, I fared better on that front than many others.
One positive aspect of this lifestyle is that you can’t help but absorb an enormous amount about the FBI, CIA, Special Forces, etc. Like most young boys, I was endlessly fascinated with talk of chasing criminals and, of course, pictured it in the most romantic terms possible. Who would have thought that all this esoteric knowledge would end up being so useful?
I came into writing from kind of a strange angle. When I graduated from college in the late eighties, I had the same dream as everyone else at the time—a corporate job, a nice car, and a house with lots of square footage.
It turns out that none of that really suited me. While I did go for the corporate job, I
drove a beat-up Jeep and lived in a tiny house in a so-so Baltimore neighborhood. Most of the money I made just kind of accumulated in my checking account and I found myself increasingly drawn to the unconventional, artistic people who lived around me. I was completely enamored with anyone who could create something from nothing because I felt like it was beyond me.

Lords of Corruption
When Josh Hagarty is recruited by the charitable organization New Africa to manage a farming project in an underdeveloped African country, he signs on, figuring that he can put his newly acquired graduate degree in engineering to good use. However, when Josh gets situated in Africa, he finds that New Africa may not be the philanthropic charity it purports itself to be. As Josh delves deeper into his work, secrets begin to unravel, throwing him into a world of violence, turmoil, and political corruption. He soon learns that Gideon, the man responsible for heading the local organization, is not only a relative of the African country’s president, but also a strong-arm thug with a tendency towards aggression and dishonesty. In his hunt for both truth and justice, Josh also discovers that his predecessor may have been murdered to cover up something he had discovered about the project, something that should have remained buried. And why has Gideon uprooted the very people that Josh thought he was supposed to be helping? Is New Africa merely a scam? With the help of Annika Gritdal, a beautiful Scandinavian aid worker, and journalist J.B. Flannary, Josh must fight to uncover the truth behind NewAfrica. In doing so, the trio must struggle to survive by evading those who are trying to prevent them from uncovering a dangerous secret – a secret that might just get them killed.
The Second Horseman
Brandon Vale is a career thief, the best there is. Of course, he is serving out a prison term for a robbery gone bad—albeit one that he didn’t commit. But then he is broken out of prison against his will by Richard Scanlon, the former FBI agent who framed him in the first place. Scanlon, who still has ties to the U.S. intelligence community, has discovered that a Ukrainian crime organization is auctioning twelve nuclear warheads to the highest bidder, but he can’t convince the government that the sale isn’t a hoax. The only way he can get his hands on the $250 million necessary to take the warheads off the market is to arrange for Brandon to steal it.
Not that Brandon has much choice—it’s either do it or go back to jail with the added years of a failed “escape” tacked on to his sentence—but he decides to get the cash by pulling off the heist he had been planning when he and Scanlon first met:hijacking the trucks that drive the casinos’ cash out of Las Vegas once a week. As the day of the warhead sale approaches, though, their carefully constructed plan begins to break
down, and Brandon starts to suspect that the deal has even higher stakes than he had imagined.
