Overview: Judith Perelman Rossner was an American novelist, best known for her 1975 novel Looking for Mr. Goodbar, which was inspired by the murder of Roseann Quinn and examined the underside of the seventies sexual liberation movement. Though Looking for Mr. Goodbar remained Rossner’s best known and best selling work, she continued to write. Her most successful post-Goodbar novel was 1983’s August, about the relationship between a troubled young woman and her psychoanalyst who has emotional troubles of her own.

Looking for Mr. Goodbar
Theresa was a quietly satisfied young teacher by day. But when the sun went down, her life was an endless, faceless whirl of bars and beds and men she’d never seen before and wouldn’t see again. If she couldn’t find love, she took chances on men who were better than no men at all. And learned, with each new night and each new nightmare, that finding her man was only the beginning.

Emmeline
From the New York Times bestselling author of Looking for Mr. Goodbar—a haunting tale of forbidden love set against the backdrop of the American industrial revolution.
This is the story of Emmeline Mosher, who, before her fourteenth birthday, was sent from her home on a farm in Maine to support her family by working in a cotton mill in Massachusetts.

So begins the sixth novel by the author of Looking for Mr. Goodbar. But nothing Judith Rossner has written can prepare the reader for this haunting love story of a young girl thrust into one of America’s early industrial towns, then drawn into a love affair for which she is far from ready.

In Emmeline, Rossner brings us the intensity, grasp of character, and storytelling ability that have distinguished her novels of modern women.
