Hijack (Venture Science Fiction Mag., 1970) (Jerry eBooks, 2020)
Edward Wellen’s feature novel for Venture is almost certainly the first science fiction Mafia novel ever published. It is the story of an incredible operation that is carried out with military-like precision in the face of impending holocaust. It has fascinating and credible characters, a wildly inventive story line and unbearable suspense. And if you think that this blurb perhaps overstates things, come back and have another look after you’ve finished HIJACK!
Hijack (1971) (Jerry eBooks, 2024)
“With respect, listen good, gentlemen. This is a scientific thing.”
They were all here on Tony’s yacht—the heads of every Family in the country. Nick began.
“The sun’s a ball of fire. It’s been burning nice and slow for a long time. But now it’s beginning to bum faster and faster. It’s going to get hotter and hotter. Pretty soon . . .”
Don Tito of Tampa cut in. “So we move into air conditioning and refrigerating?”
Nick put on the special-effects film he had made up: first the solar system, then the sun going nova, charring and vaporizing the planets.
Don Fausto of Detroit smiled uncertainly. “I got a swell bomb shelter. Real deep.”
“With respect, you can stay in it and see, if you want. But nothing’s going to ride out this fire storm.”
An Hour to Kill (1993) (Jerry eBooks, 2024)
Harry Pace. Philip Zio. Mal. All names for a man with no name. A hired killer careful not to get too close to anyone, know too much about anything, because if you do you become a threat—and threats aren’t tolerated in the circles Mal moves in. So Mal makes himself invisible, innocuous to all but those he’s hired to make his business. And then he’s deadly. Until Mal meets Maríta García. Not meets, exactly; sees. Across a crowded Miami coffee shop, where Maríta is being roughed up by a big, nasty guy with a crazed look. The guy’s her boyfriend, and the brother of Ramón Díez, one of the biggest names in South Florida’s drug world.
Mal knows he shouldn’t get involved, but fresh off a successful hit, he has an hour to kill before his flight back home to New York. So he does what he’s best at—for once, unasked and unpaid. A kill, quick and easy, that should give Maríta her freedom.
