The story is written in an evocative, smooth writing style that rings true to the reader, allowing them to get pulled into the heartfelt journey of Queenie through her ups and downs, from an alcoholic husband who causes more problems than he’s worth to an absent lover off fighting in the war. The book is amazingly complex and authentic, remaining true to the time and to the spirit of a strong, independent woman.
