Overview: About William Zellmann: I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri, where I achieved nothing notable. I joined the U. S. Navy, and for the next twenty years was largely successful in tricking the Navy into thinking that I wasn’t really a lazy slob. During this time, I met and married a wonderful woman. We had a beautiful daughter together. After retiring from the Navy, I attended the University of Arkansas. I received a BSBA in Human Resources Management, to my utter surprise (and that of some of my professors!).
Genre: Science Fiction
Rim Rebels
- In "The Rim Rebels," author William Zellman takes perhaps the most crotchety space ship captain to ever command a DIN-class space cruiser and plops him into the middle of intrigue, corruption and intergalactic political scandal. The crew of four just want to make a little dough and take on a cargo that takes them to the edge of known space. Unfortunately, their ship is damaged and repairing it sucks up their profits. While undergoing repairs at a thoroughly unattractive planet with super-high gravity, they stumble across a plot that could take down the crumbling empire and threaten the shaky Alliance planets. Captain Jirik then finds himself in cahoots with a Class I Alliance spy who ropes him into the center of the controversy. Zellman tells the story through the eyes of the captain, who would rather drink himself into a stupor and fight than deal with anything political. Yet, he goes along with the scheming spy. Not that he has a choice. The drama unfolds quickly, and the geo/spacial political angle is thought-provoking. Fast read for me. I also recommend his "The Privateer."
Man’s Hope
- The time is the present/near future. Frank Weatherly built a small custom computer company into the dominant force in the field of business computers, but his board of directors staged a takeover, and now he is a lonely widower in bitter seclusion despite his billions. David Tarrant is a US Air Force Astronaut who has been grounded, and is desperate to get back into space. David tracks Frank down and proposes an idea to get man, and himself, on a new, aggressive drive back into space. They will have to find or build a spacecraft capable of a three-year mission. Then, the crew must board a comet, and ride it through perihelion and outward to the Asteroid Belt. There, they will not only board an asteroid, they plan to bring it back to Earth! It will cost Frank his entire fortune, and even his reputation, and David must risk his life to give man a boost to the stars! Definitely "hard" science fiction! You’ll wonder if it could really be done!
