Dead of Night: A Gil Vine Murder Mystery
ON PERCENTAGE, I should have figured that pillow slip would turn out to be the fuse to a case full of dynamite. Nine times out of ten the real trouble in any hotel breaks just before the security chief is supposed to go off duty. This call came through at five to eight. Where There’s Smoke
The hero of this flashy, swift-moving story is the Fire Marshall of New York City, and its all about a fire in a radio theatre which results in the death of a guy hated by even his casual acquaintances, but whose removal starts the tough, very attractive Fire Marshal on the hunt for the firebug responsible. The love interest is a happy touch and the whole thing provides highly satisfactory chills and intrigue. Here’s the modern Fire Department and if the lingo of the business isn’t too disconcerting those who like their mysteries action-packed and slightly racy will like this a lot. ""A Main Line Mystery"".
