Overview: In 1866, (Herbert George) H.G. Wells was born to a working class family in Kent, England. Young Wells received a spotty education, interrupted by several illnesses and family difficulties, and became a draper’s apprentice as a teenager. The headmaster of Midhurst Grammar School, where he had spent a year, arranged for him to return as an "usher," or student teacher. Wells earned a government scholarship in 1884, to study biology under Thomas Henry Huxley at the Normal School of Science. Wells earned his bachelor of science and doctor of science degrees at the University of London. After marrying his cousin, Isabel, Wells began to supplement his teaching salary with short stories and freelance articles, then books, including The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Dr. Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). Wells used his international fame to promote his favorite causes, including the prevention of war, and was received by government officials around the world. He is best-remembered as an early writer of science fiction and futurism.

The Sleeper Awakes
This frighteningly prophetic tale from the progenitor of modern science fiction remains as powerful today as when it was written—more than a century ago.
Firebrand activist Graham falls into a drug-induced sleep in 1897 London—and is stunned to wake in the year 2100 to a world he does not know. But the world knows him.

When word spreads that the "Sleeper" has awakened, it rocks the foundations of what the planet has become: a dystopian existence of unending toil ruled by the all-powerful White Council. And the more Graham learns about his new era, the more he discovers that, while times and technology may change, the failures and flaws of humanity do not.

With this stark examination of a society that may yet be, author H. G. Wells crafted a timeless story of an everyman thrust into a struggle for power over both men and men’s souls, and of the cyclical nature of those who seek to break the chains of oppression, only to become the oppressors. A jarring allegory for our modern world, The Sleeper Awakes joins Wells’s many masterpieces, including The Time Machine, The Invisible Man, and The War of the Worlds.

The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth
There’s a heavy price to pay for the manipulation of nature in this novel from the revered author of The War of the Worlds and The Time Machine.
It begins as a boon for mankind—the creation of the substance Herakleophorbia IV. When fed to farm animals, it causes them to grow to enormous size. But when it is accidentally allowed to enter the local food chain, the consequences prove monstrous: Human children exposed to it grow into giants, reaching forty feet in height. At first, these giants are tolerated. Then, as they mature, they are scorned. And as they slowly begin to realize their own power and right to exist, they are feared. Humanity must face the dawn of a new era of manmade evolution—while grappling to comprehend the possibility of its own ultimate demise.

The Food of the Gods and How It Came to Earth is a thought-provoking and thrilling novel from a four-time nominee for the Nobel Prize in Literature, the author of such all-time classics as TheIsland of Doctor Moreau and The Invisible Man.
