Overview: Claude Seignolle, born in June, 1917, at Périgueux, South West France, has built a long career, both as a folklorist and a writer. In 1998, Seignolle received a knighthood from the Ordre National du Mérite, for his work as ethnographer, and in 2008 the Alfred Verdaguer Prize, from the Académie Française, for his life’s achievements. His extended experience as a folklorist merges well with Claude Seignolle’s talents as a writer of fiction and in his stories we find a wealth of vampires, werewolves – a recurring theme – and all kinds of demons – not to mention the Devil himself – all put to good use in an ambiance often (but by no means always) reflecting the countryside that the author has roamed incessantly in his searched for the old legends.
Genre: Horror/Gothic/Weird Fiction

Nightcharmer and Other Tales of Claude Seignolle: These eight tales of mystery and the supernatural feature sorcerers, the Grim Reaper in a horse-drawn coach, a beguiling bird of death, a long-dead saint turned devil, and a whole retinue of creatures of the night. Claude Seignolle, distinguished French ethnographer and folklorist and author of more than twenty-three volumes of short stories and novels, is a master of the “rustic” tale, which depicts folklore and popular traditions of the French countryside. He incarnates Satan as an entity sharing human traits, an evil spirit who identifies himself with human suffering. Seignolle’s Gothic stories are not meant merely to terrorize, however; they are intended to revive an oral tradition in danger of becoming extinct.

The Accursed: Two Diabolical Tales: THE ACCURSED is rich in the atmosphere one associates with Poe, Mary Shelley and Isak Dinesen. Yet there is no question that Claude Seignolle is a wholly original, even unique writer. An acknowledged authority on witchcraft and French folklore, he has drawn his stories from supernatural tales handed down from one generation to the next. What he has created is virtually a new genre, writing that stands on is own as literature, as superlative entertainment, and as authentic folklore.
