Overview: The youngest of three brothers, Bart Yates was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, in 1962, to Newell and Lois Yates.
In 1969 his family moved to Lamoni, Iowa, where his father was the Dean of Students at Graceland College and his mother taught business courses, also at Graceland. Bart graduated from Lamoni High School in 1981, Drake University in 1985 (with a Bachelor of Music degree in Clarinet Performance), and Boston University in 1988 (with a Master of Music degree in Woodwind Performance). Following a brief. bizarrely inappropriate stint as bursar at The Boston Conservatory, Bart began teaching private music lessons in Massachusetts in 1989, and then moved to Iowa City, Iowa, in 1999. A novel-writing class taught by Gordon Mennenga at the University of Iowa Summer Writing Festival was the catalyst for Bart’s first novel (Leave Myself Behind), which was published in 2003 by Kensington Books, and won an Alex Award from the American Library Association in 2004. His second novel, The Brothers Bishop, was published in 2006, and his third, The Distance Between Us, in 2009. His most recent novel, The Third Hill North Of Town, came out in 2014, under the pen name of Noah Bly.

White Creek: A Fable
A witty, haunting tale of family and friendship, regret and redemption, set on a remote Wyoming cattle ranch in the dead of winter.
The White Creek Ranch has been in Hap Cobb’s family for over a century and a half, but Hap is now eighty-two, and the last surviving member of his family. Tart-tongued, moody, and all too often “a miserable old fart” (in the words of his long-suffering ranch hand and closest friend, Aaron Littlefield), Hap has no rival as a home cook, owns the best-stocked private library in the state, and prides himself on his “God-given ability” to exasperate everyone he meets. The enormous ranch house he inherited long ago from his grandfather stands mostly empty these days, save for Hap and Aaron, and while their life together is both busy and comfortable, Hap often loses himself in his past, knowing he has little future left.
When a sudden blizzard hits one January evening, however, and Aaron opens the door to a young woman and a teenaged boy seeking shelter from the storm, everything Hap thought he knew about the world begins to shift. With these two unlooked-for houseguests, the White Creek Ranch soon becomes a wellspring of mystery and possibility, and will never be the same again.

The Distance Between Us
At 71, Hester Parker lives alone in an elegant Victorian house. Her biting wit can’t hide the bitterness that comes with loss – the loss of her career as a concert pianist, and of her renowned violinist husband, Arthur, who left her for another woman. The arrival of a lodger, Alex, helps her reconnect with the world outside – as well as exposing old memories and grief that she’s long tried to bury. His presence, for one short month, leaves a surprising legacy of acceptance, comfort and hope for the future
