Overview: Born Cyril Henry Hoskin, Lobsang Rampa died in Calgary, AB, at the age of 70. His best known work, The Third Eye, was published in 1956 in the UK. It was presented as "The Autobiography of a Tibetan Lama", but Clifford Burgess, a Liverpool private detective, found that Hoskin had never been to Tibet, and spoke no Tibetan.
The Dalai Lama wrote that "We do not place credence in the books written by Dr T. Lobsang Rampa. His works are highly imaginative and fictional in nature." Faced with repeated accusations in the British press, Lobsang Rampa went to live in Canada in the early sixties; he became a Canadian citizen in 1973.
