Overview: habu, a bisexual former supersonic spy jet pilot, intelligence agent, academic, mainstream book editor, and diplomat, is a published mainstream novelist, short story writer, and essayist under other names and in another dimension of his life. He has lived extensively in East and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Europe as an embassy-based intelligence agent, which influences the settings and plots of many of his stories. He now lives in a picturesque and historical Midatlantic/Upper South state university town, with an accommodating spouse, where he writes, edits, teaches, and indulges himself.
Genre: Romance MM
Gilded Cage: Commercial models, including male ones, were at the top of the pampered and self-absorbed pyramid even in the 1930s, and young American model, Alec, is quite wrapped up with himself and convinced that he is irresistibly desirable to all men, with an interest in men. He has strong views on what he deserves from a man when he is taken by fashion photographer lover, David, to Egypt to film atmospheric man’s perfume ads in Cairo and Luxor.
Feeling slighted and taken for granted by David and feeling the sexual competition from another model, Jared, Alec turns to rich, mysterious, and strikingly handsome Pasha Rushdy Abazar—at first to invoke David’s jealously, but increasingly to attract the pasha himself. Abazar, who hosts the first photo shoot at his Giza villa across the Nile from Cairo, overlooking the great pyramids, does seem to be making moves on Alec when he personally flies Alec to the second photo shoot in Luxor and wines and subsequently dines him in style in Cairo.
But Abazar’s attentions do not quite meet Alec’s expectations and Alec’s narcissism requires “it all.” The question quickly emerges of whether Alec is going to be blind to the pasha’s own, separate, agenda until it is too late to save himself and to maintain control of his own life.
Stallion Station: Tattooed and pierced muscle man Jess Gordon has a good thing going for him on the Richmond road east of Farmville, Virginia.
Jess is converting an old motel into Stallion Station, a male-male brothel flanked by a gym to entice the customers and a video recording studio to entertain the masses. As the story progresses, Gordon accumulates his stable of young rent-boys: Dino, the carpenter building the set for the video studio; Gordon’s first recruit, a video store clerk, Matt, and his friends, Jason and the more experienced Griff; Joey, brought to Gordon from court by the protectors of Gordon’s operation, and Rick, a Frisbee player being hidden away by his high school teacher lover.
Gordon seems to have his stuff together—a growing stable, official protectors with secrets and desires and fetishes of their own, and a humongous Stallion Station sign going up that can be viewed from the highway.
But Gordon pushes the envelope on services, accepting a proposal by a German industrialist to cater to a set of fantasy first-time, filmed sexual encounters.
And life starts getting very dicey for Gordon and his operation when Trebel and his randy giant Algerian bodyguard, Jordo, arrive at Stallion Station.
Lower Than the Heart: Having outlived one older lover, young Washington, D.C., playwright Trent Colson is (only barely) resisting the attractions of another older man, stage director Gerhardt Von Hultz, who is in cancer remission. Trent retreats to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, nominally for quiet time to make rewrites to his coming play, but more in sexual frustration and denial. Here he falls under the power of a predator lover, Buster, who sees sex between men as a clear victor versus vanquished struggle in which the only point is the concluding ejaculation. Buster defines Trent as the natural vanquished and manipulates him as such.
Another man enters, however, who endeavors to prove to Trent that there is far more to a sexual relationship between men than that.
Will the spell Buster has cast over Trent be broken and what will be waiting for Trent when he returns to Washington?
Trip Money: It was not a good day for Ben. He’d stumbled upon the sight of his best friend, Digger, in the sack in their shared university dorm room with his girlfriend, Stacey, who had put off his own advances because she was “saving herself for marriage.” Then suite mate J. D. both lets Ben know that Digger and Stacey had been going at it all semester and then comes on to Ben himself…
Man’s Man: Brian Hinton hasn?t set out to be a high-priced male prostitute based in L.A. but traveling far and wide to serve the desires and fetishes of rich and powerful men who can afford to pay $3,000 an hour for his attentions. Like many young, handsome men with acting talent that shines brightly on the small-town stage, Brian wants to break into movie stardom. But also like many of these young men, he finds that his greatest talent and charisma is in being at the beck and call of already-successful men who have unusual appetites and thick wallets. Unlike some of these other men, though, Brian embraces the possibilities and makes the most of the natural allure that he evokes in other man and, with gusto and without apologies or reservations, enters into a fascinating life of making the most of what he has in a reality-based arc in the spotlight that begins in na?ve, overstretching ambition and ends with a satisfied sigh.
Dark Angel Sounding: A young man’s personal experience cautionary tale of falling ever deeper under the sway of a practitioner of one the most dangerous and invasive and least discussed and written of male sexual practices–sounding–in his pursuit of being totally and fully dominated and possessed. How fully can he be taken? Will he succumb to the satanic magician or escape the wand of control invading his very being?
Triple Scream: Oh, the horror of damsels in dire distress times three. This short anthology tells the separate tales of three young women who find themselves in dire sexual straits by something out of this world.
Come Me Mr Sax Man: Trent, a young, handsome, lithe stage dancer, enjoying the best mix of the genes from a Jamaican father and French mother, is cruising the ocean with a dance troupe. He also is cruising for older, experienced men—and sometimes fending off the advances of younger, athletic men and sometimes not. While pursuing the sensual and dangerous-looking ship’s saxophonist, Buzz, in competition with a bevy of wealthy widows, on a Bahamas cruise out of Baltimore, Trent falls under the sway of an older and openly sexual and inventive Brazilian. Buzz at last shows interest in Trent too and acts on that in an overpowering way. Now Trent is left with a choice to make, if the men in his life will permit him to make the choice.
Across the Threshold: This anthology provides a treasure trove of thirty-five short stories of separate, varied "first time" gay male experiences, from the stalked to long anticipated, from the romantic to the brutal, for the young or not so young. The one central theme of all of these stories, however, is the experiences depicted all result in the beginning of a new lifestyle, not the ending of a world.
Deal Closer: An unabashed male-male, wall-to-wall action adventure of the lengths corporate executives will go in providing fringe benefits to close the deal with the big client.
Hard Knocks U: Ron might be a hunk, but he’s incredibly naïve, and now that he’s transferred to a college far away from home, he quickly becomes the prey of both male professors and students alike. His logic professor manages to seduce him by–what else?–using logic, and when he goes to the dean-slash-wrestling-coach to complain, he’s taken in once again. When the wrestling team starts handing him around like popcorn, Ron decides the only way to escape his predicament is to recruit a replacement–and sexy, young Ben is just the sort of naïve student he’s got in mind.
Rough Rides: It isn’t just the act of sex that can be rough for a gay male-the relationships involved and the whole circumstance in which one male comes together with another (or more than one) male to satisfy basic hungers can be explosive in both physical and emotional terms. In this compendium of forty-two stories, both new and previously published, habu hones in on giving readers some scintillating examples of tales and circumstances-and sexual acts-that are on the rougher side in more than one dimension. This collection isn’t for the faint of heart-but it’s a must read for those who like their GM stories rough and raw, both physically and emotionally.
