In "Doomsday Father Christmas", Santa Claus ponders what the world has become, and his place in it… And a long-suffering son spends one last Christmas with his ailing father while a blizzard whips the world into a frenzy in "Black Static".
Jack & Jill:
“The dream sequences were literally nightmarish, and done with such frightful detail that there were times where I actually exclaimed aloud… It’s also worth mentioning that there was one sequence toward the middle that, while I won’t spoil it, I’ll just say has got to be one of the most disturbing scenes to take place in a bathroom (this side of the Overlook Hotel or the Bates Motel). This novella was creepy, through and through.” – Shock Totem
Offline (Offline #1) (Short Story):
Welcome to the digital age. Cell phones and text messaging allows us to keep in touch with each other no matter where we are… Instant messaging has brought us closer together… Social networking allows anyone not only to contact you whenever they want, but to learn everything they need to know about you too. When it’s the right person, it can be wonderful. When it isn’t, it can be murder.
In the Flesh (Offline #2):
The Internet has brought us all closer to together. Strangers are just a click away. But despite all the risks, sometimes love can blossom amid the chaos. Every day, millions of people find the one they were meant to be with, their soul mate, their one true love. But on the Internet, where anyone can pretend to be someone or something other than what they really are, the only thing more dangerous than trust, is love. In this sequel to the popular short story OFFLINE, and presented as a transcript of Facebook messages in the wake of tragedy, this time the communication leaves the confines of the Internet world, and we are shown what happens when two strangers connected by burgeoning love, meet each other IN THE FLESH.
Ravenous Ghosts (Stories):
Nightmare’ is a much-overused word in the Horror genre: thus, when true nightmares emerge one fumbles for an adequate combination of words to allow ‘nightmare’ its full meaning. One such combination is surely Ravenous Ghosts. These stories by Kealan Patrick Burke are, most certainly, short and jolting nightmares. I don’t ever want to dream this kind of stuff, nor would anyone else mildly sane, I think; including Burke.
The Number 121 to Pennsylvania & Others (Stories):
The lonesome sound of a long forgotten train draws an old man to memories of a horrific past… A journalist makes the mistake of visiting a website where real-life executions are the order of the day… At the foot of an old tree, an insidious evil awaits two boys digging for treasure… A browbeaten salesman finds hope and a possible escape from the banality of his world when he returns home to find a fairytale beanstalk sprouting from his garden… A man resists the social pressure to quit smoking and puts himself at an unimaginable risk… A high school student accepts a dare to ask out the ugliest girl in school and enters a world of pain and violence… A comedian finds himself faced with a most peculiar and deadly audience…The pariah of a village accepts an offer of peace at his mother’s funeral, but the olive branch may have hidden thorns…A bunch of barflies doomed to murder sinners get together for one last drink in a dying town… These are just some of the passengers, headed for a ride through the dark uncharted regions of the heart and mind…on The Number 121 to Pennsylvania.
Includes such reader favorites as "Empathy", "Mr. Goodnight", "Underneath", "The Grief Frequency" and "Peekers".
The Tent (Novella):
A moment of confusion as the backpack, much heavier than he anticipated, moves liquidly beneath Greg’s fingers, as if he has grabbed a slimy bag of fish, and he grimaces as the mud begins to slough off around and through his fingers. Repulsed as he is, he decides it is better to keep going. Dropping something this heavy back down on the kid’s back might send him sprawling. That would be the perfect time for the other couple to poke their heads out of the tent, wouldn’t it?
Theater Macabre (Stories):
A collection 0f 19 Horror Stories from Kealan Patrick Burke is the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Turtle Boy, The Hides, Vessels, Kin, Midlisters, Master of the Moors, Ravenous Ghosts, The Number 121 to Pennsylvania & Others, Currency of Souls, Seldom Seen in August, and Jack & Jill
Thirty Miles South of Dry County:
Milestone is not a town that can be found on any map. Those who are aware of the place avoid it, and those who call it home treat it with a respect borne from fear. A once thriving mining town, the legends of myriad horrors operate as a warning to those who seek to cross its borders. After his friends disappear, Warwick Tanner, an old man whiling away his days outside a liquor store, is forced to go find them, which means crossing into the dreaded town for the first time, a town marked by a sign that proclaims that: THERE ARE NO MIRACLES IN MILESTONE.
You In? (Short Story):
For years the Wickerwood Inn has stood abandoned, home to nothing but dust and the trapped echo of past celebrations…and tragedy. For a down on his luck ex-gambler, the inn’s reputation is a thing of myth, and certainly not reason enough to turn down the first paying job to come his way in months. The inn will soon be renovated in preparation for a new lease on life. So tonight, from midnight till six, Peter Haskins will watch over the machinery. And he will soon discover that there is something else in the hotel with him, something that needs no new lease on life, for it has never died. And never will.
