Half-trained by a mage before being abandoned to the Protectorate religious order, Niijai has honed her healing while quashing other skills of her Green magic. Her friend and colleague Legeeta, predicting an imminent clash between Watrani and Frenc, encourages Niijai to practice magic for defense and attack.
When Rolf brings the dying Catal to their temple, the two clerics think only to save his life. They do not know they harbor Frenc spies chased by the Watrani. Legeeta suspects, but she is drawn to the wounded Frenc and wants to help him. She keeps her suspicions from Niijai, who already walks a keen-edged blade between the thrill of her unleashed Green magic and terror at her power’s danger. His friend beginning to heal, Rolf leaves in order to deliver the Kaerrefiorne’s orb to a connection with the Mage Council in Frenc.
Rolf barely vanishes on the horizon before the Watrani troop arrives. With Catal stillweakened, Niijai and Legeeta must hide him from the Watrani.
Yet with the Watrani is Keipven, a WitchMaster. He recognizes Niijai’s magic as a potent replacement for the missing orb. If he can bend her power to his will, his own puissance increases.
