2. Back Roads Revolution
Penny Lazarus – now a budding Wist-witch and amateur eagle-rider – is done with riddles and tricks. Traversing the alternate America known as the Back Roads, she has sworn to find the truth behind her sister Dana’s death…even if she has to destroy the world in the process.
Following the clues Dana left behind, Penny lands in the once-great city of Nottamun – only to become embroiled in an epic conflict between the forces of liberty and greed. The ravages of the merciless King Coal have driven thousands of refugees into the city walls, turning it into a hotbed of anger and rebellion. Nottamun’s leader, the would-be king and former Elvis impersonator William I, won the city’s heart with false promises and glamour – but now he’s fresh out of both.
One way or another, revolution is coming, and Penny – driven both by her love for Dana and her hatred of King Coal – is more than happy to take up the torch. By her side is Alana Canter, feral Wolf-Kin and adopted daughter of King William, compelled to protect the city she once left behind; Molly Turnbloom, blind Prophetess, preparing her flock for the coming Ruination while grappling with her Angel’s mysterious disappearance; and, reluctantly, Sly Drake, master thief, doomed to perish in hellfire by a witch’s hex – unless he can retrieve the coveted relic known as the Not-Clock.
