Overview: THEY FACE THE GREATEST BATTLE OF THEIR AGE
Cenred, son of Cenwulf the Jute, is preparing for war.
Years ago, King Arthrwys of Gwent, Pen Draeg of Brythonica, held off the invading forces of Saxons and Jutes at Badon Hill. Now his murderer and successor, Meurig-Medraut the Kin-Slayer, has challenged Ælle, King of the Saxons, to fight again on those slopes to determine once and for all who will rule in Brythonica.
Cenred and Cenwulf’s lord, King Wihtgar of Wiht, is bound by oaths of allegiance to Ælle of the Saxons, and the Jutes will join the march of his great host. They are happy to do so. The oracles for war are favourable: Woden has promised victory.
But something seems wrong.
How did the horse and rider who brought the challenge to King Ælle disappear so suddenly into the night? And why did the sting of a bee in Cenred’s ear make him hear the faint sound of women’s voices chanting? And who is the girl with green eyes and copper-coloured hair he now sees every night in his dreams?
