Overview: Gothic horror in the style of M.R. James, with pre-Lovecraftian elements. Written by Adrian Ross in 1914 in an intentionally archaic style, but modernized for contemporary readers by John Swapceinski.
Genre: Fiction > Sci-Fi/Fantasy > Horror
"The Hole of the Pit" was written by Adrian Ross (real name Arthur Reed Ropes), a friend of M.R. James, and published in 1914. The novel is set in England in 1645, during the First English Civil War. For those unfamiliar with this war, it may be helpful in understanding the novel to know that it was a conflict between the deposed King Charles I, with his Catholic forces known as "Cavaliers", against the Parliament-backed General Oliver "Noll" Cromwell and his Protestant forces, known as "Roundheads" due to their closely cropped hairstyles.
Ramsey Campbell rescued this novel from obscurity and referred to it as "one of the first masterpieces of the novel of supernatural terror". The novel was written in a purposely archaic style, which I have endeavored to modernize. This has consisted not only of making simple edits like changing "thee" and "thou" to "you", but also translating certain archaic idioms; for example, "for it hath been revealed to me that thy life shall be given to thee for a prey" becomes "for it has been revealed to me that your life shall be spared as your reward". I have also taken the liberty of editing some denigrating phrases concerning a black character, as it caused, to a modern reader, the story’s protagonist to seem less sympathetic, which was not the author’s intent.
