Buffy the Vampire Slayer: The Dust Waltz by Dan Brereton
Requirements: CBR reader, 20 Mb
Overview: Written by Dan Brereton with art by Hector Gomez, "The Dust Waltz" was a very "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" comic dating back to the series’ second season in both the chronological and the literal sense– having come out in 1998.

As an early comic, "The Dust Waltz" is very much marked as an early effort to try and transform a ‘difficult to pin down’ series rendered into the comic book format. In an introductory essay Dan Brereton tells us how much he loves Buffy and indeed his writing demonstrates an attempt to match the style and flavor of the show’s dialogue and vibe– the results however are uneven. Some lines ring much as they do on the shows, others are simply misguidedly awful. However it should be noted that this kind of uneven attempts at reproducing the trademark witty catchphrases and writing on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" has haunted the actual series itself, with even its creator Joss Whedon being responsible for more than a few misfires right up to the present– as one particularly atrocious line in Buffy Season 8, Issue 1 testifies.
