Overview: John Harvey Haggard was born on November 30, 1912 in Ozark Township, Missouri. He was an author of fifty-five short stories in the pulp magazines.
His first story, “Faster Than Light” for the October 1930 issue of Wonder Stories was written when he was seventeen in response to a contest in Air Wonder Stories; it takes on the bold idea of accelerating to the speed of light and breaking through into a new universe. In 1933, Haggard conceived the idea of the Earth-Guard Interplanetary Police, which first appeared in “Through the Einstein Line” (Wonder Stories, November 1933). Haggard had included them in a previously-written two-part serial, “Evolution Satellite” (Wonder Stories, December 1933-January 1934), which Hugo Gernsback had rejected but later published and praised for its downbeat ending. Arguably his most original story was “The Light that Kills” (Amazing Stories, February 1939), which considers the effects of light-sensitive compounds on the human body. Haggard also wrote poetry under the alias “The Planet Prince”.
J. Harvey Haggard died on March 15, 2001 in San Bernardino, California.
